Coupling of solar p modes: quasi-degenerate perturbation theory

چکیده

The interaction of a large-scale stationary poloidal velocity field (as a simple model for possibly existing giant cells) with solar p-mode oscillations is described by quasi-degenerate perturbation theory, as proposed by Lavely & Ritzwoller (1992). For oscillations of low degree (l ≤ 12) and sectoral velocity fields we obtain numerical solutions of the eigenvalue problem, and derive an approximate formula for the ensuing frequency splitting. The coupling of the oscillation modes leads to asymmetric frequency multiplets, with splittings of up to ≈ 100 nHz for a velocity with amplitude v = 100m s−1. The splitting scales with v2, with the oscillation frequency itself, and with the inverse difference of the squared frequencies of the coupling partners. Possible observable effects are briefly discussed.

Meridional Circulation and Global Solar Oscillations

We investigate the influence of large-scale meridional circulation on solar p-modes by quasi-degenerate perturbation theory, as proposed by Lavely and Ritzwoller (1992). As an input flow we use various models of stationary meridional circulation obeying the continuity equation. This flow perturbs the eigenmodes of an equilibrium model of the Sun. We derive the signatures of the meridional circu...

Slow and frozen light in optical waveguides with multiple gratings: Degenerate band edges and stationary inflection points

We show that a waveguide with multiple gratings can have a modal dispersion relation which supports frozen light. This means that light can be coupled efficiently to low group velocity modes of an optical waveguide or can even have finite coupling to zero group velocity modes. These effects are associated with stationary points in the dispersion of the form ω − ωo ∝ (k − ko), for integer order ...

Application of quasi-degenerate perturbation theory to the calculation of rotational energy levels of methane vibrational polyads.

In previous works, we have introduced an alternative perturbation scheme to find approximate solutions of the spectral problem for the rotation-vibration molecular Hamiltonian. An important feature of our approach is that the zero order Hamiltonian is the direct product of a purely vibrational Hamiltonian with the identity on the rotational degrees of freedom. The convergence of our method for ...

Rsc_cp_c3cp54834a 3..16

The quasi two-dimensional electron gas on a metal film can transmit to the surface even minute mechanical disturbances occurring in the depth, thus allowing the gentlest of all surface probes, helium atoms, to perceive the vibrations of the deepest atoms via the induced surface-charge density oscillations. A density functional perturbation theory (DFPT) and a helium atom scattering study of the...

Conductivity Coefficient Modeling in Degenerate and Non-Degenerate Modes on GNSs

Carbon nanoscrolls (CNSs) with tubular structure similar to the open multiwall carbonnanotube have been of hot debate during recent years. Due to its unique property, Graphene Nanoscroll (GNS) have attracted many research groups’ attention and have been used by them. They specially studied on energy storage devices such as batteries and super capacitors. These devices can be schematically...
